About Art & Activation
Downtown Atlanta should feel alive—with creativity, energy, and unexpected moments of joy. Atlanta Downtown's Art & Activation program helps make that vision real. We commission public art, produce cultural programming, and transform streets, parks, and storefronts into engaging, people-centered places. Since 2020 we have funded 120+ creative projects, presented 180+ artworks, supported 240+ artists, and hosted 15 artist residencies, shaping a district that truly reflects Atlanta’s talent and diversity.
Our Mission
To enhance the cultural identity, vibrancy, and inclusivity of Downtown Atlanta by supporting artists, activating public spaces, and fostering a sustainable creative ecosystem.

Who We Are
Art & Activation programming is delivered by Atlanta Downtown, the partnership of:
- Central Atlanta Progress (CAP) – a private, non-profit organization focused on planning and economic development, and
- Atlanta Downtown Improvement District (ADID) – a public-private entity funded by Downtown property owners to enhance the district’s operations and experience.
Together, CAP and ADID champion a more vibrant, livable, and connected Downtown.

Our Strategic Goals
The Art and Activation program operates with the following goals:
- Cultivate a Sustainable Creative Ecosystem-Empower artists & creative businesses through funding, residencies, & commissions.
- Enhance Cultural Identity & Economic Engagement- Present work that celebrates Atlanta’s history & diversity while driving foot traffic & business visibility.
- Foster Inclusive & Welcoming Urban Spaces-Ensure Downtown’s public realm feels safe, accessible, & people-centered.
- Innovate through Art & Design- From digital installations to interactive sculptures, facilitate new forms of expression to spark curiosity & civic pride.
- Strengthen Collaborative Partnerships- Build a resilient network of artists, property owners, businesses, & civic leaders.
A District with a Purpose
Atlanta Downtown's Art & Activation program is the public-facing expression of the Atlanta Arts & Entertainment District (AAED), created by City of Atlanta ordinance in 2017. The AAED overlay authorizes innovative signage, public art, and programming within a defined geographic boundary. Art & Activation builds on that legal foundation—applying its tools to a broader cultural strategy that delivers impact block by block, mural by mural, moment by moment.
